"Do not be fooled by its commonplace appearance. Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts. This is no ordinary lamp! It once changed the course of a young man's life; a young man who, like this lamp, was more than what he seemed: a diamond in the rough." -Aladdin

Of course I made a point to watch Disney's Aladdin while living in the Sahara region!!!  And much like Aladdin, I found our home as beautiful and unique as a "diamond in the rough" (which the Nomads living here dig up and sell out of the sand).

We saw wedding processionals (when men lead goats to their brides and slaughter the animals in front of them), we enjoyed traditional Berber "whiskey" (mint tea) and meals, and we even took a special trip deep into the desert to enjoy my birthday!

I hope you enjoy this little peek into the Saharan culture of Morocco. It is truly a special place that we will always remember.

Also, everyone in Morocco referred to our American men as "Ali Baba". This is an old story they love to tell and will call any foreign man with a beard this name. It was kind of hilarious, so if your interested here is a link to more on the legend of One Thousand and One Nights.
